Do I believe...

In God? -- Well, if you know that I'm a devout Orthodox Jew, you know that I obviously believe in God. More sepcfically, I belive in a God who is active in the Universe, who is also a personal God, and who is all-powerful, benevolent, and impossible to understand with human intellect.

In ghosts? -- I believe in an afterlife, so I can't rule out ghosts, but I am skeptical.

In aliens? -- I cannot imagine that there would be so many stars and planets if at least some of them didn't have some kind of life.

In Bigfoot? -- Nope

In fairies? -- Nope

In ESP? -- It's remotely possible, but I am skeptical about this as well.

In equal rights for gays? -- Yup.

In equal rights for women? -- Yup.

In psychics? -- See under ESP

In auras? -- It's possible, but I would need some sort of actual scientific evidence.

In true love? -- Yup

In happy endings? -- I believe that the Messiah will come at the end of days and redeem not only the Jews but all of humanity to some degree. Is that a happy ending? I think so. But that's the only happy ending I am sure about.

In abortions? -- I'm pro-choice in that I believe no government should have the right to make this moral decision for anyone. But I also wish we lived in a world where abortions were unnecessary - where birth control and financial support and adoption eliminated the need for abortion of unwanted pregnancies - as I am not completely sure what the status of a fetus is.

In Santa? -- Nope

In soulmates? -- Yup

In magic? -- I'm a follower of Maimonides' opinion that there is no such things as magic.

In evolution? -- Yup, and I also think that the events of the creation as depicted in Genesis point towards evolution more than most fundamentalists (Jewish ones included) think.

In cloning? -- It will be possible someday, but I think it's a morally questionable idea.

In werewolves? -- I think the full moon can affect some people, which is the origin of the legends, but I don't think this is meant to be a literal change.

In vampires? -- Nope

In miracles? -- Of course. Every time a baby is born, it's a miracle. Every time the rains continue to fall and the sun continues to shine, it's a miracle. And yes, this is most assuredly a POV of a religious man. So sue me, I'm religious, remember?

In Nessie? -- She seems highly unlikely, but there are so many Nessie-like sightings in so many bodys of water than a tiny part of me can't give a blanket Nope.

In interracial marriages? -- Yes. (Well, actually, I believe in the right and privilege to marry anyone we want, but I don't believe in defining the three basic body types and melanin patterns of huamnity as "races." The only race is the human race.)

In saving the rainforests? -- Yup

In saving dying species? -- Yup

In recycling? -- Only of trash, and not of bad story ideas.

In plastic surgery? -- Only for legitimate health reasons. Ourely cosmetic surgery bothers me to no end.

In animal rights? -- Nope.

We should all become vegetarians? -- Nope. I like my meat, thank you.

abortion

It's interesting that discussions about abortion tend to assume that the pregnancy is unwanted for some reason. While it's true that they are rare, and with modern medicine becoming rarer, there are also cases where the pregnancy is wanted but carrying to term will kill the mother. IIRC, Jewish law not only permits but *requires* an abortion in such a case.
