It's interesting that discussions about abortion tend to assume that the pregnancy is unwanted for some reason. While it's true that they are rare, and with modern medicine becoming rarer, there are also cases where the pregnancy is wanted but carrying to term will kill the mother. IIRC, Jewish law not only permits but *requires* an abortion in such a case.
