Back from Lunacon
Mar. 20th, 2005 07:15 pmI had a good tiem, but it were a weird con indeed.
1. The hotel is just a hotel. Flavorless, actually. But at the same time, since I didn't have to pass by everyone at the con to go from place to place in the long corridors, it felt more manageable for me. Which is funny given how crowded it was.
2. I found a minyan for Sabbath prayers. By accident. A group of yeshiva students were in the hotel for the weekend in anticipation of one of them getting married. They found some of us, and we got the word that we could join them for prayers. And for the one and only Torah reading we are required to hear during the year. This was weird. But very welcome.
3. There was a reporter at the con from the New York Sun, NYC's obscure fourth daily newspaper. He was interviewing filkers. Naturally, my PR-man sense kicked in, and I asked who he was. And naturally, I knew him. There is a small chance we might see a positive article in Sun about the con. He was non-commital. But it's so odd when my spare time life and my work-a-day life meet.
4. My panels went well, though the Buffy-related panel at 11 am on a Sunday was attended by six people. Had fun talking comics with Bob Greenberger, and talking Firefly/Serenity with Keith RA DeCandido.
5. It was relaxing. And a bit solitary as I did a lot on my own. Nice as a change, but not something I want to do often. But I made my own fun, had some good conversations in the con suite and green room, and came home much happier than I did last year.
Even if I miss the Hotel Escher.
