Here I am again, tired from staying up to watch a baseball game end late. But how could I miss it? Last week, I got to see something that never happened before in baseball history, Last night, I got to see something only slightly less unique.
A sweep is not a great World Series. If Yankees-Red Sox was LotR for baseball fans, this was the coda to RotK. But both ended just right.
I congratulate the Red Sox and their long-suffering fans on finally winning. There's not much else to say about this, is there? (And to all the annoying people who immediately ask what life in Boston will be like now that the Sox have won, do us all a favor and let the people celebrate for a while?)
New England is now the undisputed home of champions. You can find the best baseball, football, men's college basketball and women's college basketball teams in America there now. We can only hope that New England's grand streak has one more win left, a win that will send one its number to the White House.

Tiny caveat

Date: Oct. 28th, 2004 11:00 am (UTC)Larger caveat: The NBA champions are from Detroit. And legend has it that there was a sport called hockey, whose last champion was a team in Florida.
That said, the preponderance of champions in one region, a region known for making somethng sacred out of losing (with the exception of NBA Celtics in the 1960s), is noteworthy.

Date: Oct. 28th, 2004 01:30 pm (UTC)But not hockey. (Thank goodness. :-) ) The last time the Bruins won the cup was the early '70s, when hall-of-famers Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito were on the team. I'm sure their jersey numbers (#4 and #7 respectively) have since been retired.
