Why We Aren't Going to Worldcon

We really wanted to go to Worldcon. It's fairly close, a lot of our friends will be there, and we figured that such an opportunity wouldn't be likely for some time. (We are not going to Scotland, I can almost guarantee.)
But life has a way of shifting your priorities. Last Tuesday, we looked at an apartment. To buy. We liked it. And all of the sudden, our bank account looked different.
We knew, of course, that someday we would stop putting off the step from being renters to owners. We just didn't think much about it. And had this apartment come in our sights a month later, we would have most likely headed to the con anyway.
Instead, we are now looking into a mortgage, a real estate lawyer, plans for moving, plans for packing, and so on. I think that we really need a con to unwind at, but there's a down payment to think about first.
This is all rather big. I know millions of people do this every year, but I sometimes thought we could just keep renting. This is a good thing, buying our own place. But man is it daunting.
So them's of you out there going to the con, have fun and say hi to each other. And hopefully, in a few months, we can invite at least the locals to our place for a housefilk or for tea.
