Day of the Doctor
Nov. 24th, 2013 08:30 pmWow.
OK, there are lots of things to nitpick about. Like how this fits with certain other new series stuff. Or how we really should have had more past players from the show.
But I am not going there. I am staying right here with what was a tour de force of everything I love about Doctor Who. And with some amazing performances. And with a few wonderful surprises. And with a retcon that I totally approve of. I don't think that Moffat could have topped this one.
I didn't meet the Doctor 50 years ago, of course. I came to learn about him as a kid, came to watch him in high school on Saturday nights when two local PBS stations ran full stories almost back to back. I still haven't seen everything extant of the old show, and I am probably not likely to be as immersed in Who fandom as I am in DC Comics or Star Trek. But I still love the Doctors and his companions and his adventures in space and time. And that it not only made it to its 50th anniversary as an ongoing series but also as a worldwide event amazes me. Not bad for a show created to teach kids about history. Not bad for a show that was cancelled more than once and that could had easily remained lost if not for a few determined souls like RTD and Moffat.
It's not a perfect show. But it's still the Doctor. And at 50, he has never looked better. Happy anniversary!!
