So here we are, four weeks into the eagerly anticipated "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." I want to like it. I really do. I like Phil Coulson. I like Clark Gregg. I like Joss Whedon and his team. I like comic books. This show really should be fun and interesting and cool.

And it's just bland. Beyond Gregg, the cast is bland and the characters are bland. The stories are pedestrian. There is little sense of how wonderful and scary that world is, post-Avengers. There is little effort to tap into any of the weird and goofy and cool and fun ideas and plots and characters that make up the vast Marvel Comics canon. And there is very little of the sorts of things we have come to expect from a Joss Whedon show. Except some witty dialogue, that only reminds me of better shows.

It isn't bad. There is still room to hope that with a full season guaranteed, things will come together. There are hints of bigger things brewing, and of Coulson's dark secret. The people making the show have proven track records, and we know that sometimes Whedon shows need time to become great. But I didn't feel this unengaged even after four weeks of Dollhouse. At least that show had a generally impressive cast. This one doesn't.

So I guess I am sticking around based on past performance by Joss, and maybe out of a sense that somewhere in there, we will find a Marvel show to go with the mix-and-match "hey, let's use this character because we can and hire a name actor" approach of Arrow. But I don't think I am going to stick around that long if things don't change soon. Kind of sad, but it is what is it. And isn't.
