sdelmonteThis was the summer 2011 film I was looking forward to the most. Characters I am truly fond of, the arrival of Ian McShane, and of Blackbeard, and the next installment in a series that I have never lost love for.
The good news is that the things I loved are still here for the most part, that McShane is a welcome addition, that it was lots of fun. The bad news is that there is little chemistry between Depp and Penelope Cruz, that the film is too long, and that there really might be such a thing as too much Jack Sparrow in a film. I think the seeds of greatness are there but they only take root half the time.
If you stopped liking the series prior to now, you probably won't like this one, either. If you are still a fan, you will find enough to make a pleasant afternoon's viewing. But maybe we might be better off without a fifth film.
