We saw the film that should have been called "Rapunzel" today. A bit problematic in spots - Mandy Moore is not a particularly strong voice talent or singer, and the male lead has issues as a character - but overall an entertaining film with gorgeous art and a lot of heart. Nothing groundbreaking here, but a good addition to the Disney canon. (Note to [livejournal.com profile] a_is_for_amy: it really isn't as bad as we feared. And the first trailed was misleading. You might actually like it.)

The high points of the film for me were the ridiculous but charming horse Maximus first pursuing and then becoming friends with the male lead; and the big number in a barbarian bar. The former was just hilarious, and that we come to accept the initially ridiculous horse as a character is a tribute to the animation. (He never utters a word, which is also a virtue after too many talking animal sidekicks.) The latter is weird and hysterical and very Python. What's more, the barbarians are very much in the mode of Paul Kidby's Discworld art. I have to wonder if he was an influence.

Just got back from it, and I. LOVED. IT. I thought the psychology was incredibly potent and very affecting. Possibly my favorite Disney flick since The Lion King, which, well. Is a fairly huge deal for me.

Psychology yes! I keep wanting to compare the Rapunzel-Mother Gothel relationship to the the Into the Woods versions of the characters.

I freaking love the thugs. Especially Vlad. (Unicorn collector.)

I know I will probably enjoy it for what it is, but hate it because it's not the story that set my imagination on fire when I was a kid.

I will see it (probably soon), but not really expect it to be Rapunzel--just a fun Disney film that borrowed heavily from a fairy tale.
