For reasons I can't quite explain aside from a few good reviews, I watch the pilot for Fox's new cop show, The Good Guys. It's silly and ludicrous and halfway between the sort of cop show I grew up with and a total satire of such, and it really should not be very good at all.

And I really liked it. Great productions values, a surprisingly strong script, and great acting. Better than the show's premise deserves, perhaps. I don't if even quality acting can carry this show and its formula for long, but I am willing to try more just for the heck of it.

Never mind that Colin Hanks is almost a clone of his Academy Award winning dad, in looks and voice and mannerisms. If you always wanted to see Tom Hanks in a goofy police procedural (or loved him in Turner and Hooch or Dragnet), this is as close as you can get today.

We watched the beginning of the first episode, and we're liking it. I think we're going to try to put this on our schedule.

But Bradley Whitford's mustache has got to go. :-)
