The Speech

Did something I haven't done since the early Clinton years: I watched the president give a speech.

Gotta say, I liked some of what he said, didn't like a lot, and am really unsure about this plan. I think a lot of it is pie in the sky, even if this plan would be superior to what we have (or don't have) now. I also have no idea if it can pass, or if this overdue speech will make the difference. (He should have done this four months ago.) I was bothered by how much he veered from "let's all work together" to some rather sharp political sniping. Which will it be, Mr. President? And why does making everyone buy health care feel like a bad idea?

But from the second he got to Ted Kennedy's letter and legacy, the speech changed. It was not about politics, but about doing the right thing. About common decency. And about a vision of this nation that I share with Pres. Obama. He ended on a much higher note than he began, and that might mean this speech could make a difference after all. I hope so, at any rate.
