In a matter of hours, the odometer rolls over on the Jewish calendar, 5768 gives way to 5769, and the holiday of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year's Day) begins. It marks the start of a period of introspection, prayer and a strange mix of sobriety and joy that reaches its high point on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), and is then followed by the somewhat more obscure holidays and definitely more joyous holidays of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. As a whole, it gets a bit intense, and it's never easy for me to find the right mindset. But I keep trying.

To those who are observing the day, I wish you a sweet and joyous new year. And to all, I offer my sincere hope that the 12 months that begin tonight are full of peace, delight, love, compassion and the sort of surprises that make us smile.

On a more prosaic note, I will be offline observing the holiday from about 6 pm tonight till about 7:45 Wednesday. There will be other occasions this month when I am offline for the other holidays. In each case, I will not always have time to catch up on what I missed, so there will be posts asking for links as needed. Thanks.

It is years like this that I am glad that I live a ten-minute walk from my comic book store, and that they close at 8 pm on Wednesdays.

Which is probably not the thing I should be focusing on as Rosh Hashana approaches.

I'll be distracted by finishing reading last week's comics, though.

My family tends to swap spiritual space interchangeably with food-coma. I wonder what that says about us.

Chag sameach!
