Heroes S3 Premiere
Sep. 23rd, 2008 09:36 amA lot happened in two hours. Some happened way too fast, some too slowly, and we were left with a vast amount to absorb.
And yet most of it was haphazard, or covering ground we've seen before, or illogical, or just clumsy. We have characters acting in ways far too stupid to explain, we have one or two players reverting to earlier patterns of behavior, and we have things that don't make a lot of sense to me. In other words, things are back to usual. I felt this way about the first season, and only after watching it as a whole did things come into better focus. Maybe that will happen here.
Or maybe we're stuck in the same mode as season two, where ideas were thrown against the wall almost randomly and in the end maybe one or two good ones stuck. If nothing else, I am sure that Tim Kring is not a great showrunner or writer, and his choice to write both episodes only highlights some of the show's weaknesses.
That said, there were a lot of cool moments, some really good effects, and some great performances. Zachary Qunito has edged ahead of Jack Coleman and Adrian Pasdar as the best actor in the ensemble, and Cristine Rose (now a full fledged regular) is right their heels. It's hard not to like a show that has now added Bruce Boxleitner and William Katt to its array of Famous Genre Faces, and reunited Kristen Bell with another Veronica Mars cast member. The show's producers really are trying hard to come up with something both new and familiar, that borrows from the comics and from genre without aping it. It's too bad that that isn't happening at the moment.
