This Week's First Comic - Fables 75
Sep. 4th, 2008 01:43 pmThere will be more reviews later, but the double-sized Fables took up my time now.
Yes, some spoilers.
The end of the war is a bit anticlimactic, and not nearly as traumatic as I had expected, judging from Boy Blue's narration the last two issues. But while the good guys win at a heavy cost, only one major Fable dies. It's sort of like the Mutant Massacre, where lots and lots of Characters You Never Heard Of died. There is clearly a lot of death, but it's anonymous and thus not very affecting. Still, the tide of events is well thought out, Blue's narration is effective, and there are some great moments along the way.
This book is not what it was, as I have said before. There is a certain predictability and a certain lack of emotion of late. But I still enjoy it a lot, still adore a lot of the characters, and think that having the Homelands get liberated will, as Willingham promised, change everything and make this a new series.

Date: Sep. 8th, 2008 02:51 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong -- I'm fine with Blue and Bigby being alive, but given the set up, ick. Create a fake danger that doesn't hurt anyone we care about and doesn't even destroy a way too powerful mcguffin? Ick.
Basically, I agree with your analysis. It's a fun tale, but no real sense of loss, and Boy Blue's foreshadowing boiled down to "Wow, we actually took losses in war, and several times thought we'd lose."
