Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Aug. 31st, 2008 05:55 pmI went today with a diehard Yankee fan friend to Yankee Stadium to take in one last game there. Granted, I've only been there three times, being a Mets fan, but it's still one of those places that matters to baseball fans.
Glad I went, but the game was pretty bland. The Jays took and early lead, and never lost control. The Yankees looked lethargic and the fans never quite got into things. I suppose I should be used to seeing my team looking bad, given how many bad MEts games I've seen, but when it's a team you don't like versus a team you don't have any feelings about, it's hard to find much fun when the game isn't close.
Was nice to be able to buy kosher food (albeit at the usual insane ballpark prices). Found it weird that no one sang the Star Spangled Banner (played on an organ) but that they put the words for the rather cloying God Bless America on the screen. (They actually use the Kate Smith recording, to make it more cloying.) Had pretty good seats in the upper deck, but my arms are burnt, despite the suntan lotion. All in all, a pleasant day, but I SO have to make sure to get to Shea one last time as well. Yankee Stadium is a great place, but Shea is home.
