Well, it's not the only comic this week. I will read Runaways later, and I am hoping to find Madame Xanadu 1 (which my shop didn't have, which is weird, but can be blamed on the 34 Marvel titles that took over the shelves).

But you are probably all wondering, "was the second issue of Final Crisis as bad as the first?" (OK, only some of you are wondering.) And I can happily answer that is it MUCH better. Not perfect, but I can say with absolute conviction that this is what I expected last month from Grant Morrison.

We begin in Japan, and meet a team of Japanese heroes. Why? Because we quickly see that they will come into play later. Unlike last issue, what seemed like a non sequitor quickly stops being one. It's that kind of issue. A lot of things are in play here: the JLA coping with the deaths of J'Onn and Orion, the GL Corps investigating the latter death, Luthor plotting against Libra, and the actual and official return of the guy on the cover in the red costume with the lightning bolt on his chest. And everything makes sense.

I don't like everything we're seeing. I still am not sure about Darkseid and his minions being the bad guys, still not sure about how many pieces Morrison was given to play with. But i liked this comic. The art by JG Jones is still great, the pacing is strong, the script is Morrison at his best, without some of the flourishes that sometimes make his work a bit hard to read. And there are seeds here for something big.

We aren't there yet. Unlike many other Event comics, it's not wall to wall action. But that's fine. It's still set-up. But I am far more optimistic that the set-up is going to pay off.

I hope. I thought that about Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis, too. Right now, though, I am content. Given how far from that I was a month ago, I'll take it.
