A busy week, including the late arrival in my hands of the latest issue of Gargoyles: Bad Guys (shipping on time for the first time but selling out before I could buy it last month).

Trinity 3 - ZZZZZZZZZZ...Sorry. Dozed off during the single dullest fight scene of the year. The JLA arrives to fight the alien that beat John Stewart last week, and in the process of losing never stops talking. I knew this would be a bad issue when Black Canary tells the rest of the League to back up Hawkgirl. By name. I get that not everyone knows the members of the JLA, but this blatant sort of exposition was rampant the whole story. The arrival of the Big Three didn't help.

Three weeks in, and the DC version of Busiek, far inferior to the Astro City version, is in charge. Three weeks in, and I am beginning to think that we will get not a 52-part story but a 24-part story padded out and then some. And even though the second story, fleshing out a new character we met briefly in issue 1 and guest starring former Superman cast member Jose Delgado, was promising, this series isn't looking so good after all. I might be ready to drop it.

Angel: After the Fall 9 - Back to the big fight for control of LA, and things are a bit muddled. Which is to say, I'm not quite sure what Angel did that he beats the demon lords. But he is victorious, sort of. We also get some really, really good character moments - scriptwriter Brian Lynch has everyone spot on, again - and some interesting developments with Gunn, and with Wesley and Fred-Illyria. Had the actual events made more sense, I would say this was a total success. As it is, I'm still hooked despite any qualms.

Gargoyles: Bad Guys 3 - As Robyn Canmore preps her small team for its first mission in the ongoing flashback, she confronts her past and her brothers. As usual, fans of the TV show are in for a treat as Greg revisits ideas and themes left in play at the end of the series. Everyone else is likely to be a bit lost. Still, this is a good companion to the main Gargoyles comic, if less ambitious so far.

Teen Titans Year One 5 - Wonder Girl has a date with Speedy. But he should know better than to leave the ArrowCar unwatched when there are car thieves who'd like to take such a prize. A simple plot, the sort we used to on the Teen Titans cartoon, but like on that show the pieces come together very well. What's more, Donna and Roy are believable teens. I'm not sure how doing a story like this makes much sense as part of a six-issue run - I guess the last issue won't be a big finale. But the more I see of this miniseries, the more I wish DC would make it an ongoing one, set in a vague past and ignoring any concerns with continuity. It's a fun, exciting and heartfelt comic for all ages.

Batman and the Outsiders 8 - Given that Dixon is off the book after next issue, I am not sure why I bought this. Maybe because there won't be any more DC Dixon fixes soon? I could have skipped it and not felt much of a loss, since as usual there is nothing here demanding my attention. That said, though, what is here includes some great action scenes with the team stuck in China, and a very clever use of REMAC. The potential for this series to something more than an action showcase is still there. It's too bad that Dixon has been denied the chance to get it to the next level.

Three issues of Batman and the Outsiders were supposed to tie into the Batman RIP story. Is that still happening?
