Today marks the release of Robin 174. Wherein the big question is answered about who is in that Spoiler costume...

Don't say you weren't warned.

It's Steph Brown. She was never dead. Leslie and Steph faked it, and went to Africa, but Steph couldn't stay away, and now she's back. Batman always thought that something about Steph's death was off, and kept looking into it. That's why there was never a memorial.

A retcon? Yes, but the good kind. No magical return from the dead. No pretending that the events we saw didn't happen. Just a bit of a switcheroo that also restores Leslie's reputation once and for all. Leave it Dixon to do right by Steph and by the Batman family.

Oh, and the rest of the issue was okay. I think even Chuck was in a rush to get to the big moment, and thus the first 15 pages or so was not as good as have been. But this book is in good hands.

So, since I am talking comics, is Batman and the Outsiders. It's still a bit of a mess, but a very enjoyable and fun one. Dixon is still one of the good ones.

Almost the worst part of Stephanie's death was what was done to Leslie (the worst was how and why she died.)

I am SO EXCITED. Man. It's a crappy retcon but it's the best and most likely of all the options they had available and I am so totally pleased with them for picking it. And Leslie! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I read this last night. It's the sort of plotting that would have been really cool had it been deliberate from the beginning. One of the things I like about comics is that seeds can be planted years in advance of an eventual payoff. However, as you say, this does feel so much more like a retcon.

Still, I'll take it.
