Buffy should be in the middle, since I usually write the reviews in the order I read the comics, but Buffy gets to go last. You will see why. (Yes, there are spoilers.)

Detective Comics 844 - The origin of the new Scarface, a bit of fighting, and Batman and Zee talk. A pretty good issue, with some pathos, but nothing amazing. Still, Dini does a good job with all the parts and it's a nice place to be before everything comes asunder in Batman RIP.

Angel 7 - On the night LA went to Hell, Wesley learns about his new job from a familiar face, and Connor is rescued by a face we haven't seen since the second season (unless you watched Law and Order, hint hint). Very good storytelling with good art and (for some reason not related to the comic) a great cover with Spike (variant B, apparently). I just wish this didn't come out the same week as Buffy. I like to spread my Jossification around a bit.

Assuming I'm still talking to Joss.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season Eight 14 - Arriving in Tokyo, the Slayer Army prepares, with Drac's help. But Buffy first alienates Satsu, as Buffy tends to do with anyone she cares about. And then her plan goes awry. In fact, it's a trap. And four pages after Xander and Renee kiss...

Yup. Joss once again proves that he can't leave any relationship happy. Not even ones that are just getting started.

I was really enjoying this issue. It was fun, well paced, and getting somewhere. There was action, character play, and humor. And there were smoochies for Xander. I was happy. And yes, I should know better, but I am just getting so tired of it. Joss (and Drew Godard as scriptwriter for this arc) seems to revel in the painful death. I get that death sometimes happens. I get that life is not a fairy tale. That's true. But just once, can't anyone be happy for more than six minutes?

Joss, I respect you and love your work and will follow you to the ends of the Earth for Buffy and Angel and Firefly and Dollhouse and maybe even Runaways. But sometimes I just think you are going to do one death too many to keep me reading or watching.
