So much to review, so little time today.
So we keep it short, though 4 of the 5 deserve more. And there are spoilers.
Tangent: Superman’s Reign – We return to the Tangent Comics universe, where the names are the same and everything else is different. And while the spate of one-shot stories set in this universe were great a decade ago, this new 12-part miniseries (crossing over into the main DCU) is a bore. Dan Jurgens (creator of the Tangent concept) writes a rather bland story with interchangeable characters, including a weak Wally West and John Stewart. Only the four-page summary of the Tangent universe’s history by Ron Marz reminds me of what was.
Robin 172 – It’s Robin vs. Violet vs. the mob in an illegal casino. The substitute artist is just okay, but the story is lots of fun. And when I said there were spoilers, I meant it. Because at the end of the issue, we see that there is indeed a Spoiler in Gotham and she is indeed Steph Brown. I will reserve judgment about this, about how she’s not dead and what DC plans to do with her. But for now, it’s hard not to approve of DC undoing her wrongful death.
Batman and the Outsiders 5 – Lots of action, and some very good character bits as this book slowly comes together as more than just action and character play. Plus, those two people looking for Batman last month? They aren’t people so much as spirits: Ralph and Sue Dibny, now doing their version of the Deadman “take over bodies and fight the good fight” routine. Thrilled to have them reunited, not sure I like seeing them being action heroes. Fun comic overall, but still a bit messy.
Angel: After the Fall 5 – Angel versus the demon lords. With some help. Lots of help. I am really starting to love this series, though the fact that it leaves us hanging and won’t return for three issues (while we get all the gaps about what happened that first night of Hell in LA) is a sore spot. Still, the voices are spot on perfect and the action is great.
Fables 71 – Cinderella, super-spy. A really good issue, though one that feels oddly like a Darwyn Cooke issue of The Spirit in the narration and the pacing. And some good surprises, too. I think that for the moment, this series is back on track.
