Booster Gold 0 - On the way home from saving Ted Kord, Booster and the Beetles run into Parallax and Extant, and then get dumped in the 25th century, where they have to steal the very same time bubble Booster used to travel to the present in the first place. But when Ted and Booster get home, things are wrong.
Given that this was billed as the "official Zero Hour crossover," it really didn't have much to do with it. Things were sort of all over the place, and as a result this was a fairly weak issue. And while the interplay between the characters - especially Ted and Booster - and some of the dialogue were great, there was just too much exposition and not enough story. As setup, it was fine, though, but what will the payoff be? Does Ted have to die, or is he actually the future Beetle?
Beautie: An Astro City Character Special - Once again, to fill the gaps between parts of the protacted Dark Age miniseries, Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson offer a closer look at one of the myriad characters we've met along the way in the sprawling and usually amazing Astro City universe. This time we focus on Beautie, a mysterious robot who is essentially a living life-sized Barble doll but also one of the world's leading heroes. And she in turn focuses on the vexing question of where she came from. The result is a wonderful character study that examine what it means to be a hero, to be a woman, to be human, and to be alive. I haven't really cared for the Dark Age stories, and wondered if Astro City was running out of steam. Happily, it hasn't (though I am still not sure why Dark Age doesn't grab me). If Busiek, slated to write a new weekly comic focusing on Supes, Batman and Wonder Woman, brings even half the skill he displays to that series, we are in for a treat.
