So, I took the book mentioned above out of the library two weeks ago. And I am getting nowhere with it. Which surprises me given that it's a Stephen King novel and he so rarely fails me.

Thus I ask if any of you have read it, and whether it becomes more interesting after the first 150 pages. I am sure that there must be a good story in there somewhere. But I am not seeing it so far. Will it come along later?

Thanks.

I liked it very much. It's sort of in the Rose Madder vein -- it takes quite a while to really warm up. So.

I second both comments--I liked it a lot, and it's very much a second pass at Rose Madder in a lot of ways. Which I love and a lot of people don't, so.

I devoured it, and I'd read an excerpt in a short story collection, so my relationship with any pacing problems is going to be different from yours, too. Looking back--the beginning does strike me as a bit of morbid projection on the part of King to after his own death. I think the place the book really sank deep hooks into me was Scott's first bool for Lisey, inna flashback; if you got that far and just don't care about them, then it's probably never going to grab you.

I just wish I had a copy here--I read it a while ago, and while I remember most of the sequence of events, I don't remember very well the sequence they're told in, so I don't know what you've gotten to yet.

I agree that the made-up language is a little overpowering, but if you can get past that, the story -- I found -- eventually does draw you in.

I second everyone who compared it to Rose Madder. It's more like that than any of his others, I think.
