From the tedious to the terrific...

Nightwing 140 - Dick decides to get serious about crimefighting in NYC, battles thieves at the Cloisters, and decides to make that famous museum his new base of operations. Really.

New writer (Peter Tomasi) and new artist (Rags Morales), but the same result as before: I was bored. There was far too much narration. There was too much dialogue. The action scene wasn't that interesting. Batman seemed off. Nothing really worked for me.

And then we get how Dick takes over the Cloisters. It seems in the in the DCU, Bruce Wayne owns that property. And is able to somehow help get a 20something college dropout named its new curator. Who will then proceed to close it long enough to do some renovations and set up a secret base there. This is all absurd. As someone who's a longtime museum employee, I can tell you that it just doesn't work that way. Never mind that museum security these days, especially in NYC, is a lot better than we typically see in fiction.

Thus, what was long ago a great comic is bad again. Dull, and dumb, and not worth the time.

JLA Classified 50 - A mysterious and very powerful foe attacks the Watchtower. Who is he, and why does he want revenge? Part one of what looks to be a simple, somewhat old-fashioned story by longtime Spider-Man and Superman writer Roger Stern, with art by John Byrne, but an entertaining one once we get past the exposition in the first few pages. I'm glad Stern and Byrne are getting to do this, even if I think a lot of fans of modern comics will be put off.

The Spirit 12 - Our hero is in the trail of his first love, now a criminal and involved in some bad stuff. Darwyn Cooke ends his acclaimed if brief run with a nearly perfect noir tale of love, hate, crime, passion and justice. It's a shame that he decided to leave this book after only a year, but I suspect that this run will be remembered for a long time. And Cooke has said that he hopes to return to this character and his world down the line. Let's hope he does. In the meantime, I have to wonder what he will do next. I didn't care for New Frontier, loved this run, loved his Catwoman graphic novel, and think that even when his stories are not great, he bears watching for the art alone.

Ok, so in Alexville, how would Dick manage to pull off a secret lair in the cloisters?
