The Bye Bye Buffy Meme
May. 16th, 2003 09:13 amLifted from cadhla...
First episode you saw:
The premiere, less the first fifteen minutes. I tuned in quite on a whim, after my dinner plans for the evening were postponed.
Your first thought about the show:
When I first saw the bus shelter ad, I wondered just why anyone would make a TV show based on that forgotten movie, and jsut who would watch something with that title.
After seeing it, I thought, "hey, this could be good. Reminds me of She-Wolf of London."
Why do you love it:
At its best, it's the best written and most unusual TV show we have these days, and it's proof to the critics that genre series can be that good (not that I needed any proof).
Top five episodes:
1. Becoming, part 2
2. Hush
3. Once More With Feeling
4. Earshot
5. Restless
(Note: The Body is better than the latter two, but I don't think of it as a favorite. And I am surprised how much Restless has grown on me over the years. I didn't like it much at all at first.)
Least favourite episode:
Tough Love. First we give Willow and Tara something fake to fight over, and then we make Tara a mindless victim. Wrong all the way around.
Best action episode:
Never thought about this before. Given that I love the fight between Buffy and Angelus, Becoming, part 2.
Episode that made you cry:
Fiction rarely gets me to cry. Ask me another time about what has. But it's not be Buffy.
Episode that kept you in suspense:
Becoming, part 2, again. Hush.
Favourite quote:
From Spike, in that same episdoe again...
"We like to talk big. Vampires do. 'I'm going to destroy the world.' That's just tough guy talk. Strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I like this world. You've got... dog racing, Manchester United. And you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. With a real... passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Goodbye, Piccadilly. Farewell, Leicester Bloody Square. You know what I'm saying?"
Quote that made you cry:
None
Funniest quote:
Giles: "Spike? That's what the other vampire called him? It's a little unorthodox, isn't it?"
Buffy: "Maybe he's Reform."
Best 'speech':
Xander's words of widom to Dawn at the end of Potential
Most surprising moment:
Buffy sending Angel to Hell, in (see a pattern emering) Becoming, part 2
Runner-up: Buffy and Riley finding each other in battle in Hush.
Moment you couldn't watch:
I tend not to flinch at TV shows, but I think the WillowTare fight in Tough Love is unwatchably, painfully bad.
Saddest death:
Jonathan. The little guy finally got it, and gets killed at jsut that moment.
Favourite character:
A toss-up between Giles and Xander. The former is what I'd like to be sometimes, smart and tough and capable (when he's written right, anyway) and yet still geeked by books. The latter is me in high school, is pretty much all of us when confronted by the so-called betters of life.
Least favourite character:
Honestly? Buffy. I admire her. I often like her. She is the hero, and does what heroes need to do. She is the star, and deserves to be. But she's arrogant, self-centered, and smart-mouthed; she questions all authority to the point of mindlessness; is given to long fits of self-pity; and defines herself by her relationships a bit too frequently. In real life, I would never be able to be friends with her. She's the only character on Buffy (aside from Faith) I would say that about. Doesn't mean I don't like the character. I just like her less than her supporting cast.
(And for what it's worth, I usually feel the same way about Batman. He's a great character, as I indicate by buying a lot of his comics, but he's a jerk so often that I think he's the weakest thing in his comics some months, no matter how good they get.)
Funniest character:
Xander.
Best looking character:
Willow. But maybe that's because she's also the brainy girl.
Bravest character:
I'll just lift Seanan's answer: "Xander. He has no special gifts, no special talents, and the one thing he's learned from all of this is that people really die -- witness Jesse. But he keeps fighting. Brave? He wrote the book."
Smartest character:
Giles. Of course, if he's so smart, why is he letting them ruin him?
Character you would most like to be in combat with:
Giles. He looks so damn cool with that sword. Wish I knew how to use one.
Character you most wanna hug:
Willow, after Tara died.
Character who wasn't in season seven that you miss the most:
Seanan quipped "Giles." I'm inclined to agree. But in terms of characters they didn't bring back? Riley. He's a soldier who leads an unit of crack commandos, and he's a good soldier and a good man. Why wasn't he called in to help with the final fight? (And yes, I like Riley. He was too traditional a super-hero type to fit in here, but that's why I like him.)
Character with the best hair:
Xander, since he never worries about such silly things. Seven years, one hairdo.
Character with the biggest attitude:
Buffy. OK, she's earned the right to one, but it does gets a bit much, as I've noted.
Favourite scene of all time:
The Buffy/Angelus fight, right to the painful end.
Least favourite scene of all time:
Glory sucking Tara's brains out.
Quote that means the most to you:
Angelus: "Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends...No hope. Take all that away... and what's left?"
Buffy: "Me."
(Yup, it's from that episode again.)
