Looking over reviews of Sweeney Todd (as I often do after seeing af ilm), I stumbled onto this at The Onion AV Club. It gives a great overview of Sondheim's career, and it has lots and lots of samples from the man's musicals.
And understandably so. I would suggest that once the film in on DVD, you watch some of it selectively, focusing perhaps on the songs - most though not all are presented with limited or no gore.
