1. The first Sergio Aragones issue of The Spirit is on the schedule for January. As usual, Sergio will be joined by scriptwriter Mark Evanier, and the artist will be Abadazad's Mike Ploog, whose style makes him an excellent choice. While part of me feels that hiring these three veteran talents is looking backwards a bit (and will not help sales much), most of me is very happy that DC is actually hiring them. And I'm still glad that DC is giving this low selling book more time.

2. The new Batman and the Outsiders comic has changed writers before it starts. Out goes Tony Bedard (who seems to have trouble keeping any job with DC). In comes Chuck Dixon! This means that one of the best Batman writers of recent years gets to write the Bat again, along with a cast that includes Catwoman and J'Onn J'Onzz. The premise of the book is a bit dark - a "special ops" team to do the sort of dirty work super-heroes can't do, under Bats' command - but how can I pass up Dixon?

3. The hard part will be deciding what books not to buy, as this is part of a small scale revamp of the entire Bat-line (again). In addition to B&tO, Dixon will be taking over Robin; Peter Tomasi and artist Rags Morales (Identity Crisis will be taking over Nightwing; the two prime Batbooks keep Paul Dini and Grant Morrison, but get new artists - Dustin Nguyen on Detective and Tony Daniel (late of Teen Titans) on Batman; new Bat-editor Mike Marts is planning to link the Bat-line together better, harking back to the 90s; and Daniel has stated on the Geoff Johns message board that he and Morrison are working to restore a sense of "This is Gotham" to the artwork.

Now this isn't the first time that I've been excited over changes on the Bat-line, and it could be as disappointing as many of the others have been. My steady readers know that I think Morrison's work on Batman has been terribly erratic, and that I don't like having to buy every comic to follow just one or two. But I loved the special corner of the DCU that Batman and his acolytes lived in back when Dixon was writing half the books and when Denny O'Neil and Scott Peterson were editors. There's no reason to assume that we will see a return to that era, but there's reason to hope that we will see at least an increase in quality. If nothing else, the art should be great.

As to what I'll buy, odds are that Robin will wait, and that I'll try (or stick with) the rest. And if Morrison continues to confuse, I can always move from the teacher to the student.

Wow, I didn't realize things would be changing that much. Thanks for the update. I really grooved on the Dixon era too, so it's great to see he'll be on two books, not just one.

And here's hoping this Nightwing change actually works.

The answer is simple: you can't.

Resistance is futile,
