This Week's Comics: Batman, LSH
Aug. 23rd, 2007 08:53 amThe Spirit was also due this week, but Diamond UPS conspired to misplace a box. Still, it will be worth the wait.
Batman 668 - Moving to get this often-tardy book back on schedule, we get the second part of the "Batmen of Other Nations" story only two weeks after the first. And it's still humming along. Morrison gives each of these minor heroes their moment, even as Batman takes charge, even as things keep going wrong. Aside from a really odd bit of art where we get batwing shapes and panels embedded in it for four pages, JH Williams does great work. And so does Grant, who is finally giving us the Batman we expected from him, mega-capable and creepy but also intelligent, measured and able to appreciate the work that the other heroes have done. Between this book and Detective, we have a good Batman in the DCU again, still not everyone's buddy but also not the outright jerk he had become. I hope it lasts.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes 33 - Star Boy, Sun Boy and Tenzil Kem get to the bottom of things on Winath. The bad news is that we aren't really told just why what's going on is going on. The good is that Tony Bedard gives us another good script and Dennis Calero gives us more strong art. Longtime LSH fans will no doubt join me in applauding the return of a man who can eat anything, and still keep his cool. On the whole, a fun issue. Alas, Bedard and Calero are slated to be replaced in December. Too bad. But i might have to start paying attention to their respective work elsewhere.
