The US representative in Burma said today that the death toll from the cyclone there may be as high as 100,000. There are no words.
Hundreds of thousands more Burmese are desperate, starving, homeless. There is a good chance that help will never reach them, thanks to a regime that is one of the more repressive on the planet (even in an age when repression is far too common). But we have to try. I am making my donation to the International Rescue Committee, an organization with decades of experience with both helping those in need and navigating the rough seas of international diplomacy. But the Red Cross, Doctors with Borders, UNICEF, AmeriCares and many other agencies are doing what they always do, and I suspect many of you have a charity that you trust as well. So I simply suggest that you give, because we have to help.
