Through the Looking Glass?
Jun. 28th, 2006 12:02 pmWriting to you from the NY Public Library on 53rd Street. Was not planning to be here. Should have been in line for tickets for Macbeth in Central Park.
Instead, I get there to find that there are no tickets available today. Apparently, tonight is a gala benefit. That people paid for. Naturally, this came as a shock, and I gave the poor theater manager a bit of a hard time before calming down. The idea of people paying to see Shakespeare in the Park is bizarre, to say the least. Yes, I get the importance of fundraising, but this seems counter to the mission of this institution. Worse, there is nothing on the Public Theater's website about this exception. (All I found was a brief note that the gala opening night might be postponed due to rain, but that said nothing about there being no tickets.) The managers of the Public can look forward to an angry letter.
So things are already weird when I get to West 72nd Street, looking for the Judaica store. Only to find it's been closed for six months. OK, that happens.
But then I look across the street, to see that Dougie's is gone!! The original Dougie's has closed, to be replaced by another kosher restaurant, a more typical Israeli grill. A 72nd Street without Dougie's? Unthinkable!
When I got off the subway today, did I leave my own world for a parallel one? Is it a coincidence that I was reading a collection of JLA/JSA stories (from back in the day of parallel universes in DC Comics)?
I wonder what weirdness awaits me when I go across the street to MoMA. To see the Dada show...
(And for the record, I am in the library mainly to find out where ther are other Judaica stores. This post on LJ is just a pit stop. A long pit stop.)
