Superman Recedes?
Jun. 27th, 2006 08:00 amThe general critical reaction to Superman Returns has been positive so far. But one negative review stands out, alas. For it's a review by Roger Ebert.
As many of you know, I consider Ebert the go-to guy when it comes to genre films, as he has always had a fannish streak and seems to respect super-hero films as being worthwhile. (Compare him with the critic at The New Yorker, whose review of the film dismisses the enitre genre, and all of us who care along the way.)
So when he gives the film two stars, and calls it joyless, I find myself quite concerned. Yes, I will still see it, but my expecations have been lowered further.
And just for comparision, he gave Batman Begins and Spider-Man 2 4 stars, and the much-debated X-Men III three stars. Often, Ebert is far more generous than I think he should be, so when he's not generous, it spells trouble.
Let's hope that this time out he's wrong.
