DC TV: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
May. 19th, 2005 09:37 amLast night, we got the season finale of Smallville, which was followed by an extended preview of Batman Begins. And there was also an ad of note, for sneakers...
The Good: The Batman Begins preview looked great. It hooked me and only let go a bit when we here Batman's not-entirely-dark enough voice. This films holds great promise to do what the others didn't. However, it also looks to be taking itself waaaaay too seriously. Super-hero films need a sense of humor about them to work. At this point, though, I am quite optimistic.
And while all the casting looks good, Gary Oldman as Captain Jim Gordon looked perfect. At last, an actor who loks like Jim Gordon playing the part!
The Bad: Smallville. 80 minutes of gibberish, violence, poor decisions, and more nonsense. Wrapped up with a cliffhanger ending that has all the suspense of a parking ticket. I am past the point of caring, which is a shame since I still like the cast.
The Ugly: There is a new commercial promoting Converse sneakers, built around Miami Heat superstar Dwayne Wade, whose nickname is "Flash." The ad is done in the style of a static comic book, with former Converse pitchmen debating in word bubbles what kind of nickname Wade should have. Ultimately, they suggest Flash, at which point the Flash - Wally West, I think - shows up and says "Sorry, that name is taken." A bit dopey, but interesting in that it shows the fame that the various versions of the Flash have attained. How's it ugly? One of the former pitchmen is retired basketball star Larry Johnson in his guise as "Grandmama." It was ugly then, it's ugly now.
