Last Week's Comics - Countdown, Legion

Just got to the comic shop for last week's stuff today (due to various holidays and no pressing urge to schlep to a comic shop when I could). And The Spirit sold out, so that will have to wait.
Countdown 49 - What's up with Jimmy? Why is he stretching? What's up with all those Monitors? Is the Pied Piper really a Rogue again, or it is a scheme within a scheme? How is Black Adam back? And why should we care?
That last question isn't entirely answered here, but after two rather dull issues, Countdown jumps to readable. The scenes with Jimmy and with the Monitors were good, as was a short bit with Karate Kid and Red Arrow, and while the Rogues section was very padded and stilted, at least there is reason to hope that Piper hasn't truly gone back to his old ways. But I think we didn't need Black Adam back so soon, and I still feel a bit lost. Nonetheless, Tony Bedard's script is the best we've had yet. Maybe there's hope for both this series and his upcoming run on Legion. Speaking of which...
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes 30 - The Dominators have been routed (offscreen) but the threat remains, so Cosmic Boy and Brainy concoct a desperate plan. Or do they? Waid and Kitson's final issue has much of what I loved in this series' first year, but also a lot of what grew tiresome. We get hints of a biggest story, of lots more character play, of a rich and developed universe, but we never get the full picture. Most of the team remains underdeveloped, and many of the events of this story arc came and went too fast to appreciate. The pieces for a great comic were in place after the first year, but Waid and Kitson chose no to assemble them. We can hope that Bedard will correct that. For now, i wish Kitson best of luck at Marvel, and hope that Waid - who used to be unable to do anything wrong in my book but has of late grown stale - will find something new to challenge his vast skills.
