Let's get to it...

52, Week Fifty-One - It's One Year Later. Which is to say, one year since Superboy died, and the heroes are turning out for a memorial. Including the new Wonder Woman and Robin in his new outfit, and three rested and ready civilians named Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince. But that's just the background. Or set-up for comics we read a year ago.

In the spotlight, it's time to go home. Adam Strange is reunited with his family and given new eyes. Buddy Baker is back on Earth, and finds that Ellen is still his. Lobo returns to his "god" with the Emerald Eye. And Starfire undertakes to return a certain jacket, not knowing that its owner might still need it. Good stuff here, if a bit light.

And then, at last, the moment we have been waiting for. When Skeets returns. When Booster and Rip confront him. When we learn that "the 52" are 52 parallel worlds, and that it's not Skeets anymore...it's Mister Mind reborn! (Remember he went missing at the beginning of the series?) All this sets up the final issue...

To Be Concluded.

Not the best issue of the series, but it sets up the end quite well. I think that 51 weeks in, I can say that 52 is a success. But I will give my final vote next week.

Connor Hawke: Dragon's Blood 6 - The dragon is dead, but the true enemy remains, and Connor must face him alone. But we expected that, didn't we? Despite a good script and some fine character play, the series plays out rather blandly. This could have been done in half the issues and it would have been better.

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes 29 - So you were expecting Waid and Kitson? So was I. Instead, we get the next LSH writer, Tony Bedard, and a guest artist I don't know, and the secret behind why the Dominators declared war, among other things. It turns out to be a misunderstanding caused by a time-traveling Booster Gold who uttered the words "52 worlds." Alas, the story was not eaten by a small dog. It wasn't bad, but it was pretty much filling space prior to next month's farewell from Waid and Kitson. Bedard shows some skill, but not enough to make me stay. I hope he's better than this on Countdown.
