A pretty good week this time around...

52, Week Forty-Six - It's the Mad Scientists of Oolong Island vs. Black Adam, and when you have Ira Quimby and TO Morrow on your side, even he's no match. In Metropolis, Lex Luthor is arrested (or is he?). And in the ruins of Bialya, the JSA plans both for stopping Black Adam and its own future.

If you can ignore that drastic shift in tone from the last three tragic issues to one built around the intense Morrisonian oddness of Oolong Island, then this issue is a hoot. Oh, there is some serious stuff, as Veronica Cale is clearly losing it, as Will Magnus seems lost, and as we get a sense that even these loons are human. But the unfolding tale of this gang of brilliant madmen is one of 52's high points. And it is no surprise that TO Morrow remains first among equals.

Of course, we all know that we re not done with Black Adam, but now it's not so predictable what comes next, is it? That too makes this a strong issue.

The Spirit 4 - Satin Silk, long one of the other women in the Spirit's life, is reborn as a tough as nails CIA agent in this noir tale that brings back the mysterious Hussein Hussein, reimagines the Octopus as a terrorist, and shifts the focus away from the Spirit but not too much. There is more and more a sense that Cooke is working towards a bigger story that links the Octopus and the man who "killed" Denny Colt. Entertaining, if a little over-narrarated.

The Brave and the Bold 2 - Needing help to pursue the Book of Destiny to the gambling world of Ventura, Hal is teamed up with Supergirl. Who is young, bubbly and crushing on him! Waid and Perez have a lot more fun this time out with a wacky but not implausible aline world, a stornger plot, and a much better script. Too bad it looks like this story will run four or five issues, as team-up books really need stand-alones. Still, a lot better than the first issue.
