This Week's Comics - 52, Buffy, Fables
Mar. 14th, 2007 01:48 pmWOOT, I say. WOOT. For Buffy is back and Joss is with here and that much is right in the world.
but you want reviews of everything, don't you?
52, Week Forty-Five - Black Adam seeks his revenge, and the world cringes. Given that I have not been a fan where this comic has been going with its blackest Marvel, I found this to be a rather well-written comic. Not particularly fun, but better than it has any business being. If you like big super-hero fights, a doozy is coming. But if you liked the samller stories that were a highlight of 52 much of the way, they are done for, I think.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1 - It's later, and Buffy and her army of Slayers are busy. So's her new notWatcher. But things aren't right with Dawn in a big way. And what happened to Sunnydale hasn't been ignored by the US Army.
I had some doubts going into this. The last two years of the show were not great, the big finale was not the best possible ending, and it's been four years. Silly me, doubting Joss Whedon. This was a great first issue that goes in a very good direction following where the show ended, that brings back characters we missed (only three for the first go-roudn, with more to come later) and in perfect voice, and that reminds us why we loved Buffy. Also, we get at least one "Joss, you stinker" moment, a big surprise at the end, and the sort of script we have come to expect from Joss. Georges Jeanty' art isn't not perfect in terms of the faces, but it works well for an action comic.
In short, WOOT.
Fables 58 - Part two of the Wolf Family's visit home is over-narrated and a bit slow and stretched out and really doesn't add much to the greater story of the Fables. I suppose not every issue of this series can be great, but it's still disappointing when we get one from Willingham.
