sdelmonte: (DC Fanboy)

So, this weekend is the NYCC, which has become THE place to announce new projects in only its second year. And one of the projects being discussed is Countdown, the next weekly comic from DC, following the success of 52. Now, there's a good chance it will be as good as 52, as Paul Dini is the head writer. But Dan Didio, everyone's least favorite editor, "accidentally" revealed something...

The Flash who was in the teaser ad we all saw last week? It's Barry Allen.

That isn't good.

See, I am a huge Barry Allen fan. He is one of the great comic book heroes of all time. I played him as my first character in Milliways for a reason. But I think that a character who died the way he did, to save the world, should stay dead. And that his time was over a long time ago. And that DC has already been doing wrong to the Flash franchise by getting rid of Wally and by makeing Bart Flash without a good reason to do so.

So I am not glad about this at all. Now, you will tell that he might very likely be a time-travelling Barry - Marv Wolfman long ago suggested that you could bring Barry back simply by having him from right before he went to face the Anti-Monitor, a Flash knowing that his time is almost up but also determined to make it count. Or he could be from a parallel world, as it's almost a sure thing that 52 ends with the return of the Multiverse. Even so, I just don't see this being a great idea. Barry was great in his time, but I don't think he can be updated within DC continuity. (Heck, an All-Star Barry Allen comic with a CSI feel might make sense, but I don't see even that working.) So I say, let the man rest, Didio.

Alas, it looks like it won't be the case.

And thus endeth the rant.

Gaaaahhh! Why, oh why, can't DC just stop messing with the speedsters? Why?

I'll second all that, Alex. I hope we get some editorial sanity on The Flash soon.
