So, I have B&N gift cards and have no idea waht to buy. Therefore, I am asking my readers to recommend one book. I will pick two books from the list and read them and review them. Deal?

My single most-recommended book is Peter Ackroyd's London: The Biography

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell

Or...

Towing Jehovah by James Morrow

Or...

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

(Three recommendations in case they're hard to find...but The Sparrow is definitely my top recommendation. A truly wonderful book!)

The Temeraire series, which we talked about a bit, is what I'm reccing at anyone I think might like it these days. The first one in the series is His Majesty's Dragon.

But there's also a nonfiction book I've been wanting to pick up for myself--I've forgotten the author's name, but the book is A History of Unreality, and it's explorations of how famous myths originated and developed.

Regeneration, by Pat Barker. Really, really good historical fiction about a hospital for shell-shocked British soldiers in WWI -- had to read it for my class in modernism last spring. I typed up an excerpt from fairly close to the end, and it's here, if you're curious.

Anything by Charles de Lint. Trust me, there's a lot, but they're good. Dreams Underfoot is a series of short stories and good to start out on.

Hexwood, by Diana Wynne Jones. A total awesome mix of science fiction and fantasy in the best possible way, with typical Jonesian humor.

Hmmm... I picked this up for the "Sidekick" essay by Devin Grayson in the book's Superhero Section.

Also enjoyed reading about the writer who worked for Akklaim and her disatisfaction with a certain video game.
