Things for a Wednesday
Jan. 3rd, 2007 09:39 amHey all.
1. As some of you know, this week is shaping up to be a hectic one for me. Indeed, we are now at the start of a stretch when we have company from out of town for the next week (albeit different people on different days). We also have a wedding tonight, and stuff going on connected to those guests over the weekend. Plus, the theoretical workload here is pretty intense. So at the moment, my Net access at home will be down (especially in the early mornings, as the computer room is now the guest room). If you are looking for me in chat or AIM, you probably won't find me, but there's always e-mail. There might be moments, though, when I am slow to see e-mail or LJ posts. (This info is mainly for the benefit of my Milli-friends, but it never hurts to keep everyone in the loop).
2. Did you hear about the college football game where the winning team - Boise State - used tricks plays that haven't been seen in a college or pro game in decades? And that right after they used the Statue of Liberty play to win the game, the player who scored immediately went to his girlfriend - the head cheerleader - and proposed? If I saw this sort of script in a movie, I'd scoff. All that was missing was the plucky walk-on or the sick nephew.
3. We finally caught up on season two of Doctor Who. I will possibly do a longer post about Ten's first year, but for now I have to say that Tennant has won me over, that the characters and emotions are real, and that the plots are almost incidental at this point. Which is a good thing, since there were a good number of episodes from this season that really had dopey plots. Not bad, just dopey. But then, what else do we expect from the Doctor? (Milliways, people, a question: why don't we have Mickey or Jackie in the Bar yet?) We will get to Torchwood eventually, but it depends on when our other shows return.
4. Have gotten about an hour into the Hogfather film. The casting is perfect and the feel is almost right. But it seems to drag a little. And the things I didn't love about the book in terms of exposition and plot are in the film, so odds are I won't fall madly in love with it. Will of course go back and watch the rest, but probably not till next week. And I wonder how its ratings were, and whether PTerry will now start letting people make more films of his books. And whether this is a good thing.
