Of Football, Filk, Folk and Fun
Dec. 30th, 2002 03:30 pmWhat an interesting weekend we had.
We, of course, is me, Lady Mondegreen - the group and not merely Merav in her LJ suit - and various friends. It is always a blast having Seanan around, and I do so wish that someone would finish building a Nivenesque teleportation booth so that we could see her more often. And it's always a bigger thrill to have the three fine founding voice of LMG together.
Saturday night brought us to a little venu called The Knitting Factory, where we heard a concenrt by DaVinci's Notebook. No, not the actual notebook currently owned by Bill Gates (which I saw a few years back and is cool in its own right). But rather the very clever a capella group that is somewhere between Weird Al, the Kingston Trio, and Ookla the Mok on the humor-music scale. It doesn't hurt, of course, that they have great voices and have members who do dead-on impersonations of Meatloaf and Louis Armstrong. I highly recommend them to fans of filk, folk, a capella and parody. Just be warned, though, that Merav saw them last year and heard the same exact set of songs, so if you've seen them before you may wish to wait a while before going again.
Sunday was set aside for a good deal of LMG practice. The repertoire is expanding slowly, as is the level of inventiveness. It's not merely that the voices mesh, but so do the ideas fo how to make good songs better. More than than, I won't tell. But there was a moment that I liked that mixed their passion and mine.
For over the weekend, my passion, restrained a bit but still present, was football. Both NYC (which is to say the NJ Meadowlands-based) football teams made the playoffs, and with a good deal of drama. As LMG practiced, I listened in my Walkman to the end of the game between Miami and New England that set the stage for the Jets to sneak into the playoffs. As they sang, New England won, and I changed stations to the Jets game. in the Meadowlands, the fans knew what had occured in the other game, and went wild. As they did, the broadcaster said that "bedlam has broken out here." And in the background, "Bedlam Boys" had broken out amidst LMG. It made for a nice mix.
We went from music to food, as Seanan made her spectacular potato leek soup - which behaved according to form and left a small splatter on our ceiling - and we adjourned to the table. Most of the massive pot vanished. Soup is indeed good food.
And all through the weekend, with fannish friends of all stripes coming and going, we talked of Buffy and Batman and of course of poetry. Next up, hopefully, the assembled gang is going to Middle Earth at last (at last for Toon and I, anyway). And we hope to top this off with a nice little new year's eve bash for too many, where I hope that Seanan will offer my longtime "sidekick" and Batya's student of poetic form, Eytan, a few new mind-bending poetic styles to keep him busy during his winter break.

Date: Dec. 30th, 2002 01:44 pm (UTC)Anyway, if you feel like taking a chance, you could pass through the lobby of the theater on the way downtown. As the group will be arlge, you might be able to find us. Either way, I'll tell Batya and Seanan of your interest.
And if nothing else, Seanan more definitely hopes to come to BuffyCon, so hopefully you will meet then if not sooner.
