Lost - Season 3, First 2 Weeks
Oct. 13th, 2006 03:36 pmI wasn't planning of commenting about Lost every week, but I can't resist this week...
Two weeks in, and I can certainly accept why some fans feel less than thrilled. We haven't caught with the bulk of the cast, the flashbacks are adding very little to the characters or the story, and the shift in focus to "The Others" might be jarring to some people.
That said, I'm still hooked. I'm hooked despite never, ever wanting to see Jack's ex-wife again. (The only flashJack I want would be about his tattoos.) I'm hooked despite agreeing that the questions keep growing while the answers are still sparse. And I'm hooked even though I wonder if a six-week mini-season is a good idea when ratings continue to drop a litttle and a little each week.
Why am I hooked? Because the acting (with the partial exception of Matthew Fox) is still really good. Because the twists and turns in the plot are still gripping. Because the dialouge is usually quite strong. Because the flashback with Jin and Sun was still intriguing despite its flaws. Because Sawyer is a bastich but a clever one. Because Kate/Sawyer is fun. Because Jack's interplay with Juliet and Ben is fascinating (and brings out the best in Fox). Because I am dying to learn more about Ben's people. Because "Henry" introduces himself to Jack as Benjamin Linus and offers his hand to shake.
And because the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series is a plot point. The confrontation between Ben and Jack was as gripping as TV gets, and going from Jack's angry laughter at Ben's unlikely story to utter shock at seeing the last out of the Series was incredible. (And let's face it. If you were a baseball fan and had been on a desert island and someone tood you the Sox came back from 3-0 to win over the Yankees, you'd think it's a lie, too.) Michael Emerson has been nothing short of amazing as "Henry Gale" morphing into Ben Linus before our eyes.
Yes, there is much that can be found not to like. I won't deny that, and I can respect fns who gave up. I still don't think we'll ever get enough answers. But I keep finding things to love. And that makes me happy.

Date: Oct. 14th, 2006 04:15 am (UTC)The secret to their having hooked me is simple. The Others are - to us and the survivors - the bad guys. They act like bad guys and do things we think are bad. However they obviously do not see themselves as bad guys and do not think what they are doing is bad. They are sane, and seem to be normal, socialized human beings (i.e. book club, etc.). These two points of view do not mesh, and I will not be satisfied until I find out WHY they are behaving they way they have been behaving.
