From Space.com:

Informal NY survey reveals indifference and derision about Pluto plans

Alternate plan to demote Pluto proposed; astronomers reportedly split

wording of counter-proposal

Clearly, the debate could get pretty loud. If I were to predict, I would say that Pluto is in trouble. And no one but us science geeks will care.

(By which I mean: Why are they picking on Pluto now? Leave it alone!)

The reason they are trying to resolve this now is because of the discovery of 2003 UB313 last April. It's so similar to Pluto they need to know how to classify it. It's also another in an ever growing list that is remarkably like Pluto.

Please also consider that they are addressing the above mentioned issues.

To the best of my knowledge, the reason they are trying to resolve this now is because of the discovery of 2003 UB313 last April. It's so similar to Pluto they need to know how to classify it. It's also another in an ever growing list that is remarkably like Pluto.

Solar flares

Asteroids hurtiling towards Earth

And well yes some more discussion on the science budget would be nice.

I think that the definition of a planet is just getting so much press and being talked about by everyone because Pluto's status has been debated over for decades and this definition will finally put the issue to rest as much as it ever can be.

Oh and for the record I love the term Pluton, though not for any scientific reason.

And sorry sdelmonte for butting in.
