The reason they are trying to resolve this now is because of the discovery of 2003 UB313 last April. It's so similar to Pluto they need to know how to classify it. It's also another in an ever growing list that is remarkably like Pluto.

I think that the definition of a planet is just getting so much press and being talked about by everyone because Pluto's status has been debated over for decades and this definition will finally put the issue to rest as much as it ever can be.
Oh and for the record I love the term Pluton, though not for any scientific reason.
