52, Week 15 - The Death of Booster Gold! Maybe. That is, he gets to die a hero, but I think I am not the only one not buying it. According to Skeets, this wasn't supposed to happen, after all. What's really interesting is that even here, dying to save the people of Metropolis, Booster is still acting like an ass. This might be the least heroic hero's death ever. And it works. Oh, we also get more Supernova, more Clark Kent, and more Renee and Charlie in Kandahq. Good stuff, if a bit disturbing. And the two-page recap of Steel's origin is actually pretty good, with art by Steel co-creator Jon Bogdanove.
Checkmate 5 - At last, a good issue. Still not what I was hoping for, but the character play so desperately missing till now arrives finally. The main plot, about who gets to be Sasha's new knight, is just okay, but it still reads a good deal better than the muddle of the first four months. Can't say yet if this series gets one more chance, though.
Runaways 19 - In the aftermath of Gert's death, everyone tries to cope, even as (at least) one new threat rises. Some genuine surprises, and some really good moments.
The Escapists 2 - As publication of the new Escapist comic nears, a cunning publicity scheme is launched. Only things get interesting. Gotta say, this is a hard comic to describe without going on too long. Suffice it to say, BKV and artist Jason Alexander (no, not him!) are on top of their game, and BKV comes at things with a style that is familiar but not the same as in Runaways. Worth a read for the art, for the script and for the characters (like any good comic book). (NOTE: This comic came out last week - I didn't get it till today.)
