We saw the new Pirates film. While not a cinematic masterpiece, or even as good as the first, it was a perfect summer entertainment. The action was amazing, the performances were generally quite good (though I missed Geoffrey Rush's Barbosa), and the story made enough sense that I could ignore the places it didn't make sense.
It could have been shorter - the first hour was fun but unnecessary - and some of what happens to the characters is perhaps harsher than they deserve, but like the first Pirates film, there is a lot of imagination here, employed mainly to entertain. Interestingly, while much of the action is almost cartoony, the events are also a bit darker. certainly no one would call these films historically accurate, but you can feel the realities of the mid-18th century lapping at the shores of Port Royal and Tortuga.
Oh, and that ending. No spoilers, but as endings meant to whet one's appetite for another sequel go, this one does the trick.
