Here I am at work after a generally relaxing week off. Boss is not in today, but left me things to do, so I will be brief.

We saw Superman Returns last night with [livejournal.com profile] mabfan and [livejournal.com profile] gnomi and [livejournal.com profile] justcomeinalone. And to my delight and mild surprise, I enjoyed it a lot. Is it perfect? No. There are things I would have handled differently, though not many. I still wonder why they couldn'y cast slightly older actors as Supes and Lois (though the acting was good). And I am not sure that hitting the rewind button to the old films when we've had four different TV shows with more contemporary takes on the hero and his world was a smart way to get younger audiences to the theater. But more than enough of it works to please this long time Superman fan.

There is much to be said about this film, and perhaps I will give it a longer write-up when I have time. For now, though, I point you to Peter David's blog for a good asssessment of the film. I don't agree with everything he says, but he breaks things down very well.

EDIT: I'm adding a review by Neal Bailey of Superman Homepage. Neal is the best of a very capable group of Superman fans turned critics on what is (IMHO) the best Superman website. His assessment is a bit more generous than mine might be, but he and I come from the same place as Superman fans, and he is able to divide between the fanboy and the critic in himself.

I loved the movie enough to want to see it a third time.
