Superman Reruns?

Just saw the new trailer for Superman Returns.

Still not impressed. Still thinking Routh is too young for the part. Not particualrly interested in what we see of the film. (Yes, the effects are great. That means nothing these days.)


Wondering if there will be anything substantially different and new, or if we are just getting a post-millennial rehash of the earlier films. Is it really possible that after 65 years, there really is nothing left to say with Superman after all?

Still seeing it, of course. Still hoping the finished product is good. But last year, by this point the Batman Begins trailers had won me over. We shall see.

I like what we see of Kevin Spacey as Luthor.

I'm okay with it. He's a good actor and should do nicely. But my inner fanboy, for no good rason at all, wants Gene Hackman back. Given that his Luthor was equal parts serious threat and comic foil, he did great work anyway. So I find myself imagining what he'd do with a more mature approach to Luthor.

Then again, he'd still refuse to shave his head.

Hm. One thing we've never suffered is a shortage of good Luthors - Hackman, Spacey, John Shea, Michael Rosenbaum, John Glover (who might not be Lex Luthor but does channel a lot of the adult Luthor from the 80s and 90s), Clancy Brown.

I always felt that John Shea was the best Luthor, the one who most captured the essence of the character. But you're right -- they're all excellent.
