This Summer's Shakespeare in the Park
Apr. 24th, 2006 09:45 amThe Public Theater presents Shakespeare in the Park.
From June 13 to July 9, it's Macbeth with Liev Schrieber adding this part to Hamlet, Iago and Henry V during his career with the Public. However, it looks like the director is going to play up the political aspects of the play and make this yet another metaphor for our current president. While this is a valid approach - see the 60s reworking, MacBird - the reworking of Henry V towards such ends was a mixed bag. I much prefer to see Shakespeare left in its original context. However, to see this generation's great up-and-coming Shakesperean actor, I will put up with a little political license.
From August 8 to September 3, Brecht's anti-war fable Mother Courage and Children will take over, starring Meryl Streep and using a new translation by Tony Kushner. Alas, as good as Streep is likely to be, I am not a big fan of Kushner (even if he's one of the JM's biggest fans in the theater world), and expect this to be very depressing. Still, if you want to get the crowds, Kushner and Streep and Brecht will do the trick in NYC.
