I didn't watch the Super Bowl. As much as I enjoy football, I found no interest in seeing either of the teams involved, found no interest in sitting through the spectacle and bloat of the event, and found no interest in being part of the annual Budweiser Stupid Men and Smart Animals Festival.
As it turns out, the game, while close, was declared by the sports world to be a dud. And it sounded like most of the ads weren't much better.
That said, if you want to see the ads these days, you can find them online. ESPN.com has most of them, though it doesn't have the Burger King and FedEx ads yet. I watched a handful.
The MacGyver MasterCard ad was witty, but its failure to use any duct tape or cleaning solution is inexcusable. :) I think that these ads remain among the more intelligent and flexible series. And if getting the audience to recall the product is the goal, then MasterCard succeeds.
The Ford ad with Kermit is also inexcusable, but not in a funny way. "It's Not Easy Bein' Green," one of the most touching songs ever written, is misused and reinterpreted to be A) an environmental song; and B) and an endorsement of an SUV. The punchline: "I guess it IS easy being green." Thus is Kermit is reduced to just another pitchman - pitchfrog? - for a product that most likely is still not very gas-efficient or safe. Jim Henson would not be happy. I hope that the Henson family had nothing to do with this, and that they are angry, too. Shame on whoever at Disney let this happen.
(An aside: I was playing with one of my nieces Sunday, and looking through a Muppet Show book, and when I came across this song, I couldn't sing it for her. I started to choke up. There is an amazing melancholy in there, one that even with the upbeat ending never goes away totally. Joe Raposo and Jim Henson still get me every time.)
V for Vendetta looks less and less crappy with each new trailer or ad. But whether the Wachowskis will succeed at turning Moore's story into anything decent is still a big question.
And while there was nothing in the ad for Pirates 2 that isn't in the trailer, this is the film I'm looking forward to the most right now. Same actors, same writers, same director, and real Hans Zimmer music this time.
Anyone out there have any other ads they can recommend I track down?

Date: Feb. 7th, 2006 04:05 pm (UTC)FedEx is cute. It doesn't say why I should use FedEx. It only tells me that the business model used by Slate Construction was doomed to failure. And I am being too much the science geek in wanting to keep humans and dinosaurs in the proper time periods?
Burger King was...weird. Retro, but weird. How many viewers recall both Busby Berekely musicals and the old Burger King jingle?

Date: Feb. 8th, 2006 01:15 am (UTC)I didn't like the "crime deterrent" one much either. My faves were the FedEx commercials, the Stunt City one, and the Bud Light ones (which convinced me folks who drink that stuff are incredibly stupid :-) ).
