So I was in the mood for some Tom Petty, and decided to use YouTube as a jukebox, as I often do. But I had forgotten how odd and how entertaining his videos were. Especially the animated, black and white Little Nemo homage that is the video for Running Down a Dream. I still have no idea what possessed him to do Mary Jane's Last Dance as the story of a necrophiliac coroner, or why Kim Basinger played the corpse. But boy, does that stick in the memory.
So I got to thinking...do they even make videos anymore? For about ten years, they were the big thing. Bigger than the music, it seemed. And never something I cared about. Now? I have no idea if they do them, and I find it oddly sad that things have changed. It feels like most music exists without the benefit of a video. Not that I'm in touch with the contemporary music scene. But it sure feels like Internet killed the video star.
Can anyone tell me if there are still videos? And if so, if anyone is making anything as imaginative as what Tom Petty or Michael Jackson did?
