By special request, it's the return of my brief look at what's on the shelves this week. Some spoilers.

Booster Gold 17 - Booster has to make sure Barry Allen is in his lab to be struck by lightning and become the Flash. A nice idea, but one that is not really necessary. Never mind that Jurgens gets Barry all wrong. Since when did Barry carry a gun? The additional "Origins and Omens" story is a really bland retelling of Booster's origin. The whole package is a bore, and a bad sign of where Jurgens, a very inconsistent writer, might be taking this series.

Batman 686 - Batman's friends and foes alike gather to mourn him. Only something isn't right at all as we here alternate versions of the fate of Batman. Great art helps this whimsical and entertaining but not particularly important story along. I appreciate that DC wanted to wrap things up and reflect on the legend of Batman, and that Neil Gaiman agreed to help, but I would rather look forward than back. Beyond that, I prefer Morrison's insanity to Gaiman's formal prose style. As much as I want to like Gaiman's work, it never really does much for me.

Fables 81 - The fate of Blue revealed, as well as the continuing schemes of Mr. Dark. As usual, the story is interesting but the character notes lag a bit. They are lagging less than they did in "The Good Prince," however, so things are looking up. This series is never going to be as amazing at it once was but it's still engaging and well drawn.

REBELS 1 - That happy go lucky antihero and megalomaniac Vril Dox II, AKA Brainaic 2, is on the run, on Earth, and making plans. A good start for a new space opera comic, if a little cluttered in spots, with a protagonist I like to follow, a script by the talented if errtic Tony Bedard, and stellar art by Andy Clarke. There is a lot of potential here, so I will be back for more.

Angel: After the Fall 17 - A great wrap-up to a story arc that often jumped all over the place but that landed back where it came from. Brian Lynch writes the cast perfectly, and as a continuation of a series that was also hit and miss, we can't hope for a better wrap-up to "season six" (even if the art is occasionally clunky). Also, it's better than the Buffy comic has been of late, and that is a shock.
